a place where learning is human, engaging, and exciting

that is a learning laboratory for testing and prototyping new theories and approaches to learning that can be translated into products and shared as training

that stretches the boundaries of what visitors know about the human experience, confronting their own blind spots and finding a way forward

where all visitors are encouraged to leave behind their own story and learn from the stories left before them

that leverages the possibilities that technology brings us to help people learn, but never loses its human soul

where families come to find information and guidance to scaffold difficult and critical conversations about what is going on in the world

that inspires people to reach for the greatest in themselves and humanity

Our Design Principles

We hold these principles to be critical to the success of any product, service, or experience we create.

Radically Human

Our work is about people, for people, and ultimately, by people. No matter how much data or technology we may use, our designs have a soul, and are only worth pursuing if they respect the people they are for and about.

Unimpeachable

In an age where evidence is questioned, and politics seems to invade every aspect of society, we must create learning tools whose credibility not only cannot be questioned, but inspire confidence that they have no agenda.

Learning In All Directions

Our products and services are first and foremost about educating those who use them, but they are also created to allow us to learn, iterate, and evolve the individual projects, as well as approaches to future work.

Activating

While it is important to help people to think differently, our work must help people bridge the gap between learning and doing. Every design must include elements that help people explore what action they will take next.

Engaging

Its impossible to get people to learn by only being educational. In order to reach transformational change, what we make has to engage and excite our audiences, tapping into their natural curiosity and igniting a sense of wonder.

CReating a Systemic Institution

A Global Home for Learning and Connecting

Museum+

By harnessing the power of place to host provocative exhibits, convene critical discussions, and facilitate experiential activities that change outlooks, inform iteration, and provide an important interface with formal education.

R & D Lab

By developing new methods and practices that help people learn about people; and designing experience-based learning products and services that can travel around the world to teach and connect.

ThinkTank.jpg

Institute

By extending the methodology, research, data, and people of the Ubuntu Lab to engage leaders, researchers, and the public in creative problem solving for human challenges

By bringing these three elements together in an intentionally designed ground-up organizational model there is an extraordinary opportunity to create massive systemic impact

Impact Outcomes

While we believe learning is its own reward, we know such an endeavor will only be successful if it has massive societal impact.

What We Will See

People who are touched by what the Ubuntu Lab has to offer will be able to demonstrate measurable change in skills, attitudes, knowledge, but more than that, they will show an ability to put those into action. In the halls of universities, design studios, diplomatic missions, or in their local communities, the people who we encounter will be more effective in their lives and their work, and will contribute to tectonic shifts in social cohesion.

Knock-On Effects

The indirect and intangible effects are the ultimate goal. Impossible to trace back to a single source, our biggest goals are to fundamentally shift relationships between and among people. To inspire people to engage and explore their world, to value and pursue collaboration, and to use in an age of humanity.

Impact Indicators

In 50 years, how will we know the effort has been worth it?

No City Without One

The most tangible result will be that the mayor of any city in the world that wants to call itself a global player will make sure their city has a clone of the Ubuntu Lab, populated with experiences developed by our team, and part of a global network of designers, thinkers, and educators dedicated to the public understanding of humanity.

Changed Public Sentiment

People will no longer dismiss Understanding as the work of dreamers and the pursuit of pollyannas. It will be recognized as an integral part of what makes our lives rich, and key to success in our endeavors, whatever they may be.

Effective Large Scale Collaborations

Perhaps the most ambitious of all, we will see an era of truly global solutions to truly global problems. With innovation and problem solving behaving without being limited by geography or the circumstance of an individuals place of birth.
